Favorite Scene Friday! Return of the Horror Movie FSF!

Happy Friday, Folks!  I hope January was better to you than it was to me, but let’s not get into any of that bullshit right now.  Not here.  Not in February.  It’s time for our weekly Favorite Scene Friday and the one I’m going to debut for you scares the hell out of me.  I am not exaggerating.  I first watched Stephen King’s Pet Sematary when I was a wee lad, and the repugnant character of Zelda has remained in my deepest, seediest, darkest fears for the better part of twenty years.  Even as I was watching the clip, I kept turning my head in hopes that something else would grab my attention.  Alas, nothing did.  Only recently did I find out that it’s actually a man playing the horrifying sister.  According to IMDb, “Director Mary Lambert wanted Zelda and her scenes to frighten the audience but did not believe that a 13-year old girl was scary so she cast Andrew Hubatsek in the role to make something be ‘off about Zelda.’”  “Off” indeed, nice work Ms. Lambert.  Keep in mind, this is not one clip, but rather every clip featuring the hideous Zelda (no offense, Nintendo!) and modified to look even creepier.  The movie does not play out like an old film reel, but I would love to see it in its entirety in such a fashion.  Hell, I would love to see a new horror movie filmed in such a manner, it just looks so creepy I think the effect would be worth the money spent on the “transfer”.

Now, I believe I’m the only one in the Hatch that has partaken in the viewing pleasure of Zelda, Jud Crandall (“I wouldn’t go down that road.”), Pascow, Gage, and Church, the cat.  The novel is A-MAZ-ING to say the least, and obviously, as is the case in all Stephen King adaptations, far better than this movie, but the movie holds its own very well too.  If you haven’t seen it, I suggest turning out all the lights one stormy night and watching (I’d recommend this with the novel too, but it’s hard to get through in just one sitting).  All the better if you happen to be alone, but don’t blame me when you’re washing the pee-stains out of your jockeys once it’s finished its 100-minute runtime.  I think it’s easy to admit that they don’t make horror movies like this anymore, but I wish they would.  I’m not one to be cast out to sea in the “reboot” boat still rowing around Hollywood, but if, say, James Wan, for example, wanted to update the movie, I’d be there opening night without a doubt.  I guess it’s easier to just bide my time until it happens (at the rate these reboots are being pumped out) rather than hope something like Sinister lives up to the level of jumps and scares that Pet Sematary gives us.  Sinister was a MONUMENTAL let-down by the way.  Anywho, Happy Friday, again, Folks!  Enjoy the weekend and don’t forget to check back in March for my next FSF!  SPOILER ALERT:  I’m getting married in March so the scene will be wedding-themed; that’s all I can say at this point.

  1. Dude, why? This flick is scary enough as it is without the creepy editing!!!

    Pet Sematary is seriously one of the most disturbing/creepy movies I've ever seen. Ghosts, zombies, killer undead babies and cats, mutant sister-men...it's got it all.

    Even the sequel scared me as a kid. The whole father-figure-becoming-a-zombie-and-turning-on-you thing made me suspicious of my dad for a while...

    Excellent FSF! Happy Friday!

  2. I'm in love with Pet Sematary, which sounds kind of fucking demented but yeah....

    My favorite scene is the Achilles heel slice. YIKES!

    Sidenote: My sister named her kid after the boy in this flick. I mean, Gage is a cool name and all, but he's 15 now and I'm still scared he's going to be run over by a semi.

  3. @Robert,

    You think they'll reboot it anytime soon? Should we write a letter? Also, I can totally buy into your dad turning into a zombie one day, MuHahHahHahHahHahHah . . .

    @Lindsay,

    Thanks for reading! We love the "fucking demented" here in the Hatch, so join us anytime. Achilles heel slice is the without a doubt the most memorable scene, and honestly, I originally intended that to be the FSF, but when I came across this Zelda scene and the "effects" used, I knew my search was complete. Gage is such a creepy kid & poor Jud Crandall (I love his voice; tone, accent, the whole nine - it just pleases me for some reason).

    1. I wouldn't mind a reboot. The novella (?) has a Wendigo in it, right (I'll have to read it someday)? Why not throw a wendigo into the mix with all the other craziness?

      Weird to think that the guy that played Jud also played Herman Munster.

      Gage: First I play with Judd, then mommy came, and I play with mommy. We play daddy, we had a awful good time! Now, I want to play with you...
