Batch o’ Hatch: Lincoln’s Voice, The Details Trailer, and Nightbreed

Lincoln’s Voice

About a week back I caught the Lincoln trailer and wondered what was up with Daniel Day Lewis’ Lincoln voice:

Devin over at Badass Digest pointed out that Day Lewis’ interpretation is probably spot on. There’s a pretty funny video that splices Pee Wee Herman’s voice with parts of the Lincoln trailer that Jimmy Fallon did as a bonus.

Let me know what you think of the trailer and Day Lewis' voice.

The Details Trailer

I caught this trailer for The Details on JoBlo a few nights back. It looks interesting and, while I’m not familiar with director Jacob Aaron Estes’ work, I consider myself a fan of Tobey Maguire. Looks like a solid black comedy.

Are you a fan of Tobey Maguire?

Nightbreed

Have you ever heard of writer/director Clive Barker's Nightbreed?

I saw it a few years back and didn’t think much of it. It wasn’t horrible but it didn’t blow me away. It wasn't until earlier this year that I read this Badass Digest article and learned that a new cut was in the works - The Cabal Cut, named after Barker's original novella.

I bought the newest issue of Empire Magazine (well, for the US anyway) over the weekend and it had a big spread on Nightbreed’s original, disappointing, and butchered release and the long road to the new cut. This sounds to me like the most work ever done to produce a new cut of a movie.

Get yer hands on that issue of Empire to read all about the new cut of Nightbreed and its (hopefully) impending Blu-Ray release. There's no way this film will ever equal Clive Barker's Hellraiser for me (or even his lesser known but still awesome Lord of Illusions) but I’m pretty stoked to check out The Cabal Cut.

Anyone seen Nightbreed? Any thoughts on The Cabal Cut?

  1. Yeah I'm worried Lincoln just isn't going to interest me that much. Even the trailer has failed to get me excited. But I'm sure it will hoover up the Oscars. Nightbreed looks like a movie to enjoy on mind-altering drugs perhaps?

  2. Pete,

Even though Day Lewis' voice threw me at first, I'm still pretty stoked for the movie. I hope we both like it.

Perhaps the new cut of Nightbreed should come with an acid tab?

    Thanks for reading!

  3. Looks way better than Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter ... the voice is a little strange though. But Spielberg is pretty brilliant. I'll go with his vision.

  4. Entagimleben - Never did see AL Vampire Hunter but I hope this new Lincoln is better. I'm willing to trust Spielberg.

    Thanks for reading!

  5. I saw the Cabal Cut of Nightbreed a few months ago. It's still got a few nagging problems (the assault on Midian really drags) but all in all it's a huge improvement over the theatrical cut.

    1. Lackey - Awesome. Really hope I can see it soon. You saw it at a screening I take it? Did you like the original cut at all? I'm wondering how people who were "meh" about the film - myself included - will feel about the new cut.

    2. I saw it at a screening introduced by Russell Cherrington (one of the producers of the Cabal Cut) and Anne Bobby (the female lead).

I enjoy the theatrical cut but I'll admit it is hugely flawed. I guess it depends on why you didn't care for the original. I always thought the big problem with the film was that there were huge chunks of the story that were missing--which was obvious to me because I was familiar with the novella--and that's largely corrected in the Cabal Cut.

The other main difference is that I guess the original producers had someone dub Lylesburg's dialogue in post, recording over Doug Bradley's original line readings. For the Cabal Cut, Bradley went in and re-dubbed.

The main caveat I'd have is to not go in expecting a polished, finished product. I had heard a bit of restoration work had been done, but I was still surprised to the extent that the footage sourced from VHS tapes looks...well...like it was sourced from VHS tapes.

I have a bit of a more in-depth write-up at my site if you're interested: http://forcedviewing.com/2012/07/17/terror-in-the-aisles-11-event-coverage-by-lackey/ I actually saw it as part of a marathon so you'll have to scroll down a bit to get to the Nightbreed bits.

    3. Lackey - Just read your original write up - good stuff. Hopefully I'll see the new cut someday.

      Thanks again for dropping by!
